Speed matters in delivery. Reliability matters. But none of it matters more than making sure the rider who left in the morning comes home safe at the end of the day. At YellowBIRD, Personal Protective Equipment is not optional, not recommended, not a suggestion buried in an onboarding document. It is a non-negotiable condition of being on the road as part of our network.
This is what we require, what we stand behind, and why it matters.
The Helmet: The One Item That Cannot Be Compromised
Every YellowBIRD rider wears a helmet. Full stop.
Not a helmet when it feels necessary. Not a helmet for long trips only. A helmet on every trip, every zone, every delivery — no exceptions.
Uganda’s road safety data is clear. Head injuries are the leading cause of fatality and serious disability in motorcycle accidents. A helmet does not prevent accidents. But it is the single most effective piece of equipment for surviving one. At YellowBIRD we require helmets that meet recognised safety standards properly fitted, properly fastened, and in good working condition. A cracked or compromised helmet is not a helmet. It is a false sense of security, and we do not permit it.
We also strongly encourage riders to carry a spare helmet at all times. Not for passengers YellowBIRD riders are on delivery, not passenger transport. The spare is for the rare situation where a rider’s primary helmet is damaged during the working day and needs to be replaced before continuing.
High-Visibility Vest or Jacket
Kampala’s roads are busy, unpredictable, and not always well-lit. Being seen by other road users is one of the simplest and most effective safety measures a rider can take.
YellowBIRD riders wear high-visibility branded vests or jackets that serve two purposes simultaneously. First, they make the rider visible to vehicles, pedestrians, and other road users particularly in low-light conditions, early mornings, and during evening delivery runs. Second, they identify the rider as a professional, verified YellowBIRD delivery operator building customer trust at the door and accountability on the road.
The branded visibility vest is not just safety equipment. It is the rider’s professional identity. It signals to every merchant, every customer, and every road user that the person wearing it has been trained, vetted, and is operating within a professional logistics network.
Gloves
Rider gloves are standard equipment for every YellowBIRD rider. They serve a straightforward purpose protecting the hands in the event of a fall, reducing vibration fatigue during long working days, and maintaining grip on handlebars in wet or cold conditions.
In a city where a rider may complete twenty or more deliveries in a single day, hand fatigue is a real operational issue that affects both safety and performance. Gloves are a simple, affordable intervention with significant protective value that riders who have experienced an unprotected fall on tarmac never debate.
Closed-Toe Footwear
Open footwear sandals, slippers, open shoes is not permitted for YellowBIRD riders on duty. Every rider is required to wear closed-toe shoes or boots that provide protection for the feet and ankles the parts of the body most exposed in a low-speed motorcycle incident.
Proper footwear also provides better grip on foot pegs, better road feel, and reduces the risk of foot injuries from road debris, hot exhaust contact, and urban terrain hazards that are part of the daily reality of Kampala’s delivery routes.
Reflective Gear for Night and Low-Light Delivery
For riders completing deliveries during evening hours or in low-visibility conditions, reflective strips or reflective outerwear are required in addition to the standard high-visibility vest. Being visible at night is not the same as being visible during the day. Reflective gear that catches headlights from approaching vehicles gives riders an additional layer of protection that standard visibility vests do not provide in the dark.
YellowBIRD’s operations team monitors delivery windows and ensures that riders assigned to late-day or evening runs are equipped appropriately before they dispatch.
Rain Gear
Kampala’s weather does not pause for delivery schedules. Riders who operate in wet conditions without appropriate rain gear face not just discomfort but genuine safety risks — reduced visibility, impaired braking distances, and compromised road surface traction that requires adjusted riding technique.
YellowBIRD encourages every rider to maintain rain gear as part of their standard equipment kit. A waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers are practical investments that keep the rider dry, alert, and capable of operating safely regardless of the weather.
Equipment Condition: Worn Gear Is Not Safe Gear
PPE has a lifespan. A helmet that has absorbed a significant impact must be replaced even if it shows no visible external damage, the internal structure may be compromised. A vest that has lost its reflective properties is no longer doing its job. Gloves with worn grip are less protective than no gloves at all.
YellowBIRD conducts regular equipment checks as part of rider performance reviews. Riders are encouraged to report damaged or compromised equipment immediately and to understand that riding with inadequate PPE is not a cost-saving measure. It is a risk that no delivery is worth taking.
Why We Are Strict About This
Some riders will have worked in environments where PPE was loosely enforced or entirely ignored. At YellowBIRD we are strict about this for a reason that goes beyond rules.
Uganda’s boda boda sector employs an estimated 1.2 million people nationally. These are parents, children, breadwinners, and community members whose health and safety directly affects the wellbeing of the households and communities they support. When a rider is injured on the road without adequate protection, the consequences extend far beyond the rider to families who lose income, to children whose school fees go unpaid, to communities that lose a productive and working member.
YellowBIRD’s insurance coverage provides financial protection when accidents happen. But insurance is what you fall back on when prevention fails. Prevention is the helmet, the vest, the gloves, the proper shoes. Prevention is the culture we build where every rider in our network understands that arriving safely is more important than arriving fast.
To Every YellowBIRD Rider
You are the most important part of this operation. Not the technology. Not the dashboard. Not the API. You. The person on the road, navigating the city, picking up from merchants, knocking on customers’ doors, and making commerce happen in the most literal sense possible.
Wear your helmet. Put on your vest. Gear up properly every single morning — not because the rules say so, but because you matter. Your family needs you home. Your zone needs you operational. And YellowBIRD needs you safe.
Gear up. Deliver. Come home.
